Yale Law School, LL.B.

After receiving his LLB at Yale Law School, Alvin began his legal career as an Air Force Staff Judge Advocate in Southeast Asia, where he successfully defended an airman in a case in which the death penalty had been made available. His last year in the Air Force was spent presiding over trials as a military judge. Alvin then began his career in civil practice in Washington D.C. where he handled many high-profile election law cases and even represented one of the key Watergate defendants. During this time, he primarily practiced in both the trial and appellate courts in the district and in Virginia.

When Alvin moved to Florida for the next phase of his career, he served as principal litigating partner at Steel Hector & Davis. While in that role, he was lead counsel for Florida Power & Light Company in a series of bet-your-company cases, including a 108-day, multi-district trial against the principal supplier of nuclear power plants in the United States. The trial resulted in a $1.7 billion settlement for the 24 plaintiff utility companies.

While Alvin has successfully represented many prominent corporate clients such as Miami Herald, General Motors, the Republic of Ecuador, American Airlines, Delta Airlines, U-Haul, Southeast Bank, The Government of El Salvador, Liggett Group, Inc., Knight Ridder, Inc. Rust-Oleum and Medtronic, he has not deprived smaller clients of his skill set. To that end, Alvin has also represented many individuals, lesser-known corporations, and entrepreneurs.

Beyond trial work, Alvin has served as lead counsel in well over 100 appeals. He has argued cases in Florida’s Supreme Court; in five of Florida’s District Court of Appeals; and in the Second, Fourth, Fifth, Tenth, Eleventh and the D.C. Circuit United States Circuit Courts of Appeal. In one such representation Alvin served as lead appellate counsel for one of the major manufacturers in the Engle tobacco case litigation.
